MCAST Special (MercuryServer) - Jan 2009 - Jay Fury

MCast is dedicating a special showcase event to MercuryServer members who wish to display their talents:
Jason Konturas
MS Username: “Jay Fury”

His Bio:
Jason Konturas (Jay Fury) is often a name that comes to mind when you are talking about true pioneers of the progressive music scene in the New England. Since starting his actual DJ career in 1996 at the age of 19, he has spent countless hours maturing into the DJ/Producer he is today. His Seamless mixing abilities got him recognized early, and landed him his first residencies in popular local nightclubs. After some time, Jay started DJing at an AfterHours club, and quickly became the resident DJ. It was at this time that Jay widened his influences, and developed the unmatchable programming skills and his amazing ability to move a crowd- which he is still known for. Jay was voted “RI’s Best AfterHours DJ” in 2000, and quickly became a local legend throughout Hartford, CT and Providence, RI. Jay held that residency for 2 and a half years until the club finally shut down in 2003. Over the next few years things were ok, but the whole club scene was struggling to hang on due to strict State Laws, and an overall crackdown on the clubs (particularly house music venues). The whole progressive movement seemed to go back underground, and gigs became hard to come by. Refusing to conform to what club owners wanted to hear, Jay always kept true to his sound and influences including John digweed, Moshic, Yunus Guvenen and Gab oliver. Jay Still appears now and then as a guest DJ in clubs and Parties throughout the Northeast, US. Even though Jay is still actively putting out Mix CD’s, he is starting to concentrate on production. Currently in the Studio working on a new CD, Jay is trying to fine tune his Dark and Heavy Sound. The style of music Jay plays would be classified as Dark Progressive House with a Tribal Influence. Reigning from Rhode Island (USA), Jay fury hopes that 2009 will bring some global exposure to his already extensive resume.

Welcome my dear listeners, ive missed you!! its like i havent been on here since last year……….(insert fake laughs)…….sorry, just had to do it. Ok, now moving along, i have to say, 2008 was a pretty hectic year for me, job wise, marriage wise, party wise, sickness wise, and also family wise(since my wife is expecting our 2nd child).
So, for the last couple of days ive been really thinking about life, about how things are just moving along in our lives, you know, politics, economy and all that crap that really gets you worried at times; here in town things havent been that bad, considering how things are across the border in Mexico, and to tell you the truth, its been depressing me for the longest time, i used to love going to Mexico and just having so much fun, now, its just imposible, way to much shit going down, i think its been close to 2000 deaths in 2008 alone done execution style by the drug cartels, so, dont think im going on a mexican vacation any time soon, and to all you my Mexican friends, please be safe.
Ok, now to the music part of our little show, this month im freakin excited since i have a monster of a guest, and i dont mean that in any bad way, i mean it in the monster as in “this guy is freaking huge, i mean, scary huge”, so ence the amount of excitedness on my behalf, so without further athou i give you:::
Robert Babicz

“A Cheerful Temper”, the name of Robert Babicz’s debut album for Systematic Recordings is arguably the best way to describe the Cologne based Pole. Answering the question why he is choosing this specific name, Babicz explains that he feels caught between two worlds: “The real world of everyday life and a surreal dream world comparable to the backdrop of a fairy tale.” Robert’s musical career starts out quite exceptionally and indeed rather fabulously in the early 90s. Right after the phenomenon of Chicago and deep house, techno began to establish itself as a brand new and totally original part of youth culture. In 1989, the year the wall came down, Berlin sees the first big techno happenings like Love Parade and Teknozid. But Cologne
also sees many new clubs like the Space club or the Sweatbox. Pioneers of these days were Reinhard and Wolfgang Voigt (now running the Kompakt empire), The Modernist, Mate Galic, Roland Casper and Rob Acid (aka Robert Babicz). Robert’s first release “Happy answer” becomes an unexpectedly big hit. Especially in the UK, on the label London Records the track storms the charts at the same time as M.A.R.R.S. “Pump up the volume” and “Theme from s- express”. More and more acid house influenced records come out and soon they dominate club culture. Of the time Robert wistfully remembers: “It was an incredibly exciting but also
very excessive time of my life with loads of wonderful moments and parties.” At the end of the 90s Robert withdraws somewhat in order to reflect and to reinvent himself. He begins to produce records as Atlon Inc and Dicabor, with an identity completely opposite to that of Rob Acid productions. The quality and the sound standard of these ambient projects become more and more important in his work and at the same time they improve it as he masters new equipment and techniques. In 2001 he meets Marc Romboy and Klaus Derichs and together they create a new platform called Shortcut Recordings dedicated to Robert’s club
tracks. After a period of calm and relaxed tracks it is now time to pump up the volume and raise the BPMs again. His productions become very technoish at this stage, moving away from his acid house influences. After Robert collaborates with Marc Romboy on the label Le Petit Prince, Romboy creates Systematic Recordings in the summer of 2004. He asks Robert to remix his first single with the Detroit legend Blake Baxter and to do a new version for Berlin’s house impresario Phonique. On top of that Robert starts to release singles on high profiled imprints like Kompakt, Treibstoff and Steve Bug’s Audiomatique. Those who are following Robert’s career over the years, know that his sound and the standard of his productions reach almost audiophile standards. No surprise then that many well known artists like Martinez, Minilogue or Gabriel Ananda request his special abilities for mastering their productions. One reason for his famous sound stems in part from his collection of old analogue equipment (even from the 60s and 70s) which Robert uses alongside his computer. Besides drum machines like the famous Roland TR808 and TR909, Robert owns a variety of unique machines like special effects and EQs the size of living rooms, some taken from German TV stations to edit their movies and crime shows. He even uses equalizers used by the
secret service and compressors used by East German radio stations. It is no wonder then that the sound quality of the album is both graceful and crystal clear. Tracks like “Sin” and “Loosing Memories” surprise with their club compatible deepness while at the same time moving between the genres of Electronica, Techno and classic House. ‘A Cheerful Temper’ is indeed a very special and genre-breaking album full of beautiful electronic club music. Please have a look on Robert ́s webpages not to miss one of his legendary live shows in your area. Apart from other producers Babicz does not play as a DJ but as a real live act without
any playbacks. Any of his shows is distinctive and individual as he never performs the same songs and sounds. Robert is on extended album promotion world tour in 2007.
The man was kind enough to send us a hour and a half mix that is just stupid good, so hopefully all of you guys will enjoy it as i did.
cheers.

As always i give you my latest mix, this time a live recording i did at a little get together, and as always i think i was very very drunk at that time, the new castles i was having at the moment did the job pretty well.
For this little ensemble i mixed a pretty decent amount of tracks that im just loving at the moment, most of it with a really nice housey feeling to them, now, since this mix was done live i really dont have a trackslist for it, but im will try and write one down while listening to the mix, i promise.
And so, please take a chill pill and enjoy this lovely mix.

The Weekend 009 on MCast December 31 2008
Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all of you MCast listeners around the world! 2008 has finally reached its final days and I am very excited to bring you another installment of The Weekend. This year was a year of many struggles as I dealt with a ruptured eardrum that put me on the sidelines for the majority of this year. With that said I am very glad to bring you this mix. It features some of the biggest records of 2008 that I have been saving up for the end of the year. As always feedback is appreciated and encouraged!
Nikola Gala had an awesome year of production so I made sure to put a couple of his tracks on this mix. Also I have to compliment the label Plastic City for the constant stream of singles that they have released year after year especially in 2008. Another label deserving of a mention has to be Escada Music, which also released some great house music this year. While 2008 was another tough year for many, the music that was released was great. I can’t wait to hear what will be released in 2009.
Lastly I just want to say a special thank you to all of the kind people at MCast for the resident djs to admins and other folks that keep us up and running 24/7. You folks all do such great work and I cannot tell you how much it means to me. Thank you! Now onto the music…

sonic:torsion 022 on MCast December 21 2008
With 2008 coming to a close, the final sonic:torsion of this year features 2 hours from myself.

This time around the musical pallet consists of two mixes, each distinctive on their own, but put side by side they flow cohesively. In the first hour, a selection of some timeless tracks merge with some fresher ones to bring about a sort of liquid groove feel. Yum. Sounds viscous. The second hour portrays a rather more contemporary view on the house scene. A bit of San Francisco meets Detroit if you will… ending with the glorious You in love by Aybee. All in all, a fun two hours of music, closing out an interesting year…

More chilling holiday broo ha ha, with a sinister sixty minute ride from myself.

This month sonic:torsion goes even deeper down the rabbit hole, channeling some seriously twisted sounds from beyond the whatever. From the misleading opening swashes of Jimmy Edgar’s Telautraux into the devious tribal tech jaunt of Sex Trothler’s Face (tribute to head), the path/motif is laid out… deeper, weirder, stranger.
01. Jimmy Edgar - Telautraux [Warp]
02. Sex Trothler - Face (tribute to head) [Wagon Repair]
03. Peace Division - BU4T (Bearweasel mix) [Tsuba]
04. Mark Henning - Stash (Tim Gregor remix) [Soma]

See you soon.

6 commentsPreserve The Essence 011 on MCast Nov 2008 - Part2 Ezequiel Marotte
In 2007 I had the pleasure to host Ezequiel Marotte in a previous show, “Mistress Of Sound” on RadioOne (Lebanon), his set was a hit! And since I started the “Preserve The Essence” show here on MCast I always had in mind to host him again, sooner or later.
Lets see what he has in store for us this time;
From Argentina here is Dj/Producer Ezequiel Marotte!

His bio:
“Ezequiel has been a DJ since his 15 years, he was born in 1985 in La Plata city town, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Through his childhood he has shown an addiction and interest for music, which immediately introduced him into mixing music for several events. In the next years, he began searching for new and different sounds that produced a great growth for him and an immense passion for electronic music. Thanks to his parents, Ezequiel had an important influence with sounds like New Order, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, to name some between so many others of that decade, one of those three, his favourite.
